not really, Gearing is all about ratios. They use a smaller cassette that has a much smaller driver then a normal Walmart variety bike. This allows the use of a smaller sprocket with the same gearing or even higher gearing. Big sprockets get in the way especially at skate parks and also the unnecessary weight of a big sprocket. back in the day you had to be a lot more careful about dropping in because your sprocket would hit but now the with small sprocket trend that isn't a problem. I know that weight difference isn't huge but modern riders are all about weight savings. You'd be surprised how much difference a couple of ounces can make in bike control when in the air. Especially from the wheels. Riding with the "micro gearing" doesnt feel an different then with a big ass sprocket. You can even get higher gearing with a smaller sprocket by going to cassette hub.
